The Escapee

Acrylic on canvas

2026

20 × 20 cm

This work captures a striking and unexpected local character - a male Superb Parrot often spotted around Mitcham and Donvale. Rumour suggests he escaped from an enclosure years ago, yet he now appears happily integrated, frequently seen flying with a pair of Australian King Parrot. His vivid plumage inspired an exploration of bold, expressive colour and texture. Using a palette knife, I layered thick acrylic paint to create movement and energy across the surface, reflecting the bird’s lively presence. The painting celebrates both this unusual suburban story and the joy of observing unexpected beauty in everyday surroundings.
